The Incidence of Thyroid Diseases in Korean Adults by Ultrasonography

Abstract
Thyroid diseases are usually diagnosed by several functional methods, radioisotope scan, ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration cytology. Rapid development of high resolution gray-scale ultrasonography enable us not only differentiate cystic or solid, benign or malignant nodule but also histologic characteristics.
Despite these advantages, the report about incidence of thyroid diseases of Korean adults is not published yet.
The authors studied the incidence of thyroid diseases of Korean adults by ultrasonography and analysed the ultrasonographic findings retrospectively combined with pathologic, clinical findings and follow up ultrasonography.

The results were as follows ;
1. The incidence of thyroid diseases of Korean adults was 7.12¢¥9
(Man : 5.64 0, Woman : 9.97 % )
2. The incidence of each thyroid disease was 5.76 % for adenomas and cyst, 1.16 % for nodular hypertrophy, 0.13 % for diffuse hypertrophy, 0.04 % for thyroid cancer and 0.03 % for thyroiditis
3. There wasn¢¥t definite pathognomonic findings of malignant thyroid nodule but multiple nodules, well defined margin, complete surrounding halo and inhomogeneous echo pattern suggesting the sign of benignity of thyroid nodules.
